Renowned for his comedic genius, Adam Sandler ventures into uncharted territory with his latest role in the Netflix film “Spaceman,” delivering what critics are calling his most serious performance to date.

At the film’s recent Los Angeles premiere, Sandler revealed the challenges of shedding his comedic persona under the direction of Johan Renck. “I want to see none of Adam Sandler in there,” Renck insisted, prompting Sandler to quip, “I hear that at home too: ‘I want to see none of Adam Sandler.'” Despite the humorous exchange, Sandler admitted to the rigorous process of stripping away his signature style for the role, emphasizing, “He didn’t want me sounding like me, he didn’t want me making faces. It was a difficult process.”

“Spaceman” follows the journey of an astronaut, portrayed by Sandler, who embarks on a mission to the edge of the solar system while grappling with personal turmoil back home. Amidst his struggles, he forms an unexpected bond with a giant extraterrestrial spider, voiced by Paul Dano.

Renck’s decision to cast Sandler was influenced by the comedian’s fearless approach to acting. “Comedians live life onstage making fools out of themselves in front of people. They’re like, ‘I’m not afraid of anything,'” Renck explained. This fearlessness allowed Renck the freedom to explore the film’s themes of regret and vulnerability without compromising its seriousness.

To prepare for the role, Sandler and Renck consulted astronauts aboard the International Space Station, gaining insight into their daily lives and emotional experiences. Mulligan, who portrays Sandler’s wife in the film, was drawn to the story’s romantic and poignant themes, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With its thought-provoking narrative and stellar performances, “Spaceman” offers audiences a captivating exploration of human connection and resilience. Don’t miss this gripping tale, now showing in select theaters and premiering on Netflix this Friday.
